Twenty minutes. It sounded reasonable. They could wait twenty minutes.
Except the sun was moving, Tom realized. The slash of light above them was already thinner than when they’d fallen, shadows creeping across the narrow space. And with the shadows came cold, and not normal autumn cold, but something deeper. Something that seemed to seep from the stone itself.

With a bang of her clipboard, Kyrene, the assigned instructor from the Office for Earthen Reintegration, quieted the bustling room of human archwizards. The bearded men and ladies (also bearded) turned their attention to her.
“Good morning, Grand Mages,” Kyrene said. “Today we learn about a common object you shall find in your new Earthen homes. A lightbulb.”

LET SLEEPING TROLLS LIE

With every shuffling step, an odor of rotten entrails emanated from Trolgar’s body in waves. The odor pressed its way forward, then shrank back into the dankness only to relentlessly push further into the light, as Trolgar lumbered to the edge of his lair.
“Flee! Fly! Fow Fun! Take strut sticks offa crossing trestle mine!!!!” Trolgar roared and burst into the light.
