π Special Call π
We are currently curating submissions for our Halloween Special edition! If you have any art, puzzles, DIY craft articles, etc. related to the spooky season, please submit them to submissions AT starspunlit DOT org by September 15th, 2025. In your cover letter, please mention that your submission is for our Halloween Special edition.
If submitting artwork, please ensure it has been digitally created. AI generated art is NOT accepted.
If submitting other forms of media, then show us what you've got! We have no rules other than to keep it kid-friendly.
π We look forward to seeing your work! π
As a volunteer artist, you will be tasked with reading one accepted story for publication and creating 1-3 illustrations to go along with the plot (we will assign specifics based on the story). You may utilize any style you wish! For examples on what we like, check out our Gallery under the About page.
Once we assign your story, you must complete your digital illustration(s) at least 1 week before the end of the quarter so we can publish the story according to our schedule. This will give you anywhere from 1-2 months of time to work. However, the sooner you complete your art, the better it is for us!
The length of your committment is up to you. You are welcome to join us for just one story or for longer! The options will be made available upon your acceptance.
To those who feel uncertain about the process, please know that you will never be left in the dark. Hulan Chadraa, our Chief Illustrator, will be in constant communication with you and will help guide you through the entire process. She is just one email away!
At this time, we are unfortunately unable to pay our artists, but we hope to change this in the future. We hope you'll still consider illustrating with us!
If you would like to be a volunteer artist, complete the following steps:
Curate a portfolio of 3-5 fantasy illustrations that accurately capture your preferred style or your range of style (it's your choice which approach you go for!)
Craft a brief message that includes your biography and any relevant art awards you have received. (P.S. you don't need awards to work with us! We welcome individuals from all walks of life)
Paste the message into the body of an email to illustrators@starspunlit.org (illustrators AT starspunlit DOT org). Type "ART PORTFOLIO" in the subject line.
Attach your portfolio as either one attachment with different pages for each illustration (pdf, .doc, or .docx) or separate image attachments (JPG, JPEG, or PNG)
Submit!
Starspun Lit will NOT consider any work created, developed, or assisted with the use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT or DALLΒ·E beyond basic grammar checking or prompt generation. Attempting to submit AI-assisted works may result in being banned from submitting works in the future.
You should hear back from us within 1 week. If it has been 3 weeks with no response, please follow up with us at office@starspunlit.org (office AT starspunlit DOT org).
If we choose not to accept you as a volunteer artist at this time, you are welcome to submit a new portfolio in 1 month provided that you do not repeat more than 2 illustrations in your new portfolio. We want to see your new work! We will also provide feedback where applicable on what we would like to see more of or differently.
If accepted, first of all, congratulations! Second, you will be added to our queue of volunteer artists and as soon as we have a story available for you, we will send it over. Let us know if you have any conflicts that will inhibit you from completing the illustrations on time and we will keep you on hold until you are next available.
