Three nights ago, four crystal doves had come to me, calling out as I sat underneath the weeping willow in front of my family’s home. Their cooing calls turned to words as I watched them glimmer in the flickering light from our hearth-fire coming from the open door.
“Camila. You are chosen. Altarin calls for you.”

Avin stood quivering with excitement and fear. Her blue hair was wrapped under the black turban meant for contestants, and her blue eyes were slightly watery. At the far end of the arena, the dragon basked in the sun without a care in the world. Why would it anyway?

BOTTLED UP

Before them, in a natural clearing, was a monolith of black stone. It appeared fantastically tall, but a circular entrance had been carved out. The vegetation stopped growing as it neared the base, as if the plants were scared to touch the unnaturally smooth surface.
“Do you hear it?” asked Jada.
“Hear what?”
“The voices. They’re coming from here.”
