Gazing up at the dark indigo sky, there isn’t a cloud in sight; they're surrounded by towering trees that cover the landscape. The wind blows through the trees, rustling the leaves. The breeze carries the smell of blue star flowers through the land. Jubi closes their eyes, taking it in. They walk away from the tree dwelling, to the clearing ahead, looking around for a pleasant spot to bathe themself in the solitude of the night.
Jubi plops down on the tall grass, feeling the soft blades beneath their scarred hands. They sneak out every dusk just to stargaze. It brings them comfort to get away from all the noise of their newfound home.
They love their friends and are glad to be free, but they occasionally need quiet; not everyone made it out. They are well familiar with the sound of suffocating silence, but the silence of night is much more soothing to them. When they were captive, they never had the privilege of going out to bask in the twilight, taking in the shimmering stars and the glowing moon, which reflects its soft light, touching every part of their home, except for the places the shadows steal away. When they're alone like this, Jubi’s thoughts are always drawn back to Mia.
“Jubi, just keep running! Don’t look back!” Mia yells to them. Yanking their sleeve forcefully, the two run as fast as they can out of the burning circus tent. Behind the pair are their angered captors shouting commands at their guards. They are almost out of the clearing, some of their friends already disappearing into the forest ahead. Glowing orbs of magic fly past their heads at the speed of light. Jubi turns around to look, barely dodging an attack thrown at the pair.
Jubi’s hoof snags on a hidden branch below them, and as they sprawl forward, their wrist falls out of Mia’s grip. The soil beneath breaks their fall, smashing their face into the ground. The pain from the impact blossoms through their head. Mia jolts to a stop feet ahead of them. Whipping around, she spots Jubi disoriented on the ground, with a gash above their right brow that drips its contents into their eye. She frantically dashes to Jubi, “Gods, Jubi!” —Mia pants, flicking her eyes to the oncoming enemies— “They’re getting closer, we have to go! Now!” She shouts. She hoists Jubi up by the shoulders, taking one last glance behind them. That's when she catches sight of something that would change everything, forever. Hues of green and purple magic fly straight at Jubi, its energy crackling through the air. The light from the spell almost blinds her. Mia barely has time to think. She shoves her sibling out of the way of the devastating attack. “RUN JUBI, AS FAR AS YOU C—” It’s as though she were struck with lightning, her limbs jolt and shake. Mia’s knees buckle, and she collapses to the ground—
—Jubi lies still on the grass, trapped in memories until someone calls out into the dark, “Jubi, are you out there!”
Vance’s shouting startles them out of their trance, snapping their head over to the dwelling. Jubi must have forgotten to tell somebody they were out here.
They hear quiet chatter, “Idiot, how many times do I have to tell you they won't respond?!” “Jeez, Fallon, I get it, I get it- “
They hear more playful shouting and clatter. Jubi figures it's time to head back, though; tomorrow they can relive their memories and think of a way to save Mia.
